Pride and Prejudice.

I have just finished watching the new version of Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, and I have to say I loved it.

Quite a few people, including my mother, had already explained to me in detail prior to my watching the movie that nobody can do the job of playing Mr Darcy better than Colin Firth, nobody, and that's that. Well, I do not find Colin Firth even remotely attractive, never have, but I wisely kept my mouth shut and decided that I was quite capable of forming my own opinion.

So, I bought the DVD. Having never read the book I did not really know what to expect, but the film really floored me. I cried a few times and, even more imortantly, I got that melting, fluttery feeling in my stomach that one only gets from watching (or reading) really good drama. Keira Knightley was wonderful in those scenes, so vulnerable and dignified and fragile, all at the same time. Matthew MacFadyen was magnificent as a very restrained man so overwhelmed by his own feelings that he lets go of his pride to make them known, only to be told that they are insufficient--he is insufficient for the woman he loves.

While I have not watched the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, I have seen Colin Firth in other period pieces. He is a good actor, but McFadyen brought so much more intensity to his role, so much believable struggle, that I fell completely in love with him and cannot imagine anyone else as Mr Darcy, ever.

It's not as much his physical appearance as it is his voice, interestingly enough. Now and again he looks absolutely beautiful in close-ups; he has an interestingly flawed face and the most riveting mouth when he actually talks, but otherwise he's not all that attractive. His voice, however, is something else entirely. I would kill to keep him talking. I think that's the most beautiful speaking voice I've ever heard. Ever.

I lust after that voice. I want to go to bed with it.

I could go on about all the other actors (Donald Sutherland and Brenda Blethlyn were magnificent as usual, and I've always liked Rosamund Pike), but the thing that made this movie so unforgettable to me was the Darcy/Elizabeth dynamic, so I'll leave it at that.

I want to see this film, now. I've been told it's excellent, but I never had a chance to see it in theaters, and I don't rent many movies. But you say it's worth buying?

It was to me. I can'T say whether it will have the same effect on anybody else though. ^__^

I adored Colin Firth as Darcy, and was pretty scared when I heard they were doing a new adaptation. And then I heard they'd cast Matthew McFaddyen, and I stopped being scared because if anyone could take it up, and even possibly do a better job, it was him.

And you're dead on about his physical appearance and voice.

If you like him, I strongly recommand Spooks, a BBC series about MI5, and The Reckoning, where his part isn't that big but, god, magnificent scenes between him and Paul Bettany, entirely worth it.

Ooh, I wish I knew where I could get Spooks! I'm dead interested in the MI5 as it is, so it would be wonderful. Is it out on DVD yet?

Darn, I need Prode and Prejudice icons, quick. :)

Ta-daaa! Reliable site, too, and no shipping fees... at least not to France, I suppose it's the same for - is it Germany you're in? They have more seasons than just this one, too.

Oooh, thank you sooo much! Indeed, there are no shipping fees and a season is 20 Euros cheaper than at Amazon's! I'll buy the first two seasons now, and then I'll see. ^__^

I agree %100 with what you say about McFayden. ♥ I'm in love with him. His voice is just... ♥ oh my. I especially love the scene where Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy were shouting in the rain. The intensity and chemistry they had. :33

Oh, the rain scene was brilliant. I had tears in my eyes the whole time because it was so genuine.

I melt and giggle whenever there are major Darcy/Elizabeth scenes. But especially when she comes to his house in Derbyshire.

Plus..that last scene when he comes out of the fog. OMG hotness.

pride & prejudice
the movie is a must. keira knightly out did herself. i didn't care for her acting in the pirate movies, but she changed my mind in pride & prejudice. and i can't say enough about matthew mcfaddyen. he has a very pleasant look, and his voice is sweet to the ears. But, it was what his face was saying when he wasn't speaking that made me want to know what he was thinking. sexy man, definately
