Why the HELL did I pay for a DeviantArt account? Two mere weeks after I got my account they're restricting nudity like there's no tomorrow -- I quote:

1. "NO SEXUAL THEMES. This means no displays of sexual acts of any kind, no displays of masturbation, no displays of erections, no displays of male ejaculates or excess female lubricants and no other pornographic or explicit sexual posing or displays.", and if that weren't enough,

2. "NO GRATUITOUS NUDITY. This is a vague guideline, but in essence we are actively encouraging the submission of 'artistic' nudes and not simple shots of naked people. Your nude submission should obviously possess some artistic merit as judged by the administration. Most deviations which are classified as gratuitous are those in which the only evident purpose of the photograph is to display a person’s penis, testicles, vagina, breast, nipples, or buttocks."

Um, sexual acts of any kind? I don't know, but I think that includes just about anything -- foreplay too. And it makes me very uncomfortable to have other people judge the artistic merit of my submissions.

So. DeviantArt has a problem with nudity in general and depiction of sexual acts in particular.

I think it's needless to say that porn exists. And when it's clumsily done it has no artistic merit whatsoever -- it can even be ugly and disgusting and empty.

Then again, art is supposed to hold the mirror up to nature, isn't it? And while nature can be lovely or pretty or even beautiful, it can also be ugly and disgusting and heartbreaking. The same goes for human nature.

You see, I don't think of myself as great artist (or indeed an artist at all), but I do draw. Why? Because sometimes I come across things that won't leave me alone -- whether it's a character in an anime or a fragment of a sentence in someone's story that's so perfect I want to cry or just a mood I want to capture.

And strangely enough, a lot of those things have to do with sex. Again, why?

Well, because it's where people often are at their most ridiculous, their most vulnerable and, rarely, at their most sublime. Because it's sometimes about giving, sometimes about greed, and often about such a complex web of mingled emotions that it's hard to put a name to them, let alone portray them in a single picture.

But, one can try.

Yes, porn exists, I'll be the last to deny it. Cheap, trashy art exists (and there is a demand for that, too, even if one might choose not to pander to it). And yet, sex is not synonymous with porn.

Even more, sex is an intrinsic part of human culture, and denying that won't make it any less true.

I need my own domain. Dammit.

In other news, I read the second chapter of Hard Candy yesterday (twice, heh -- damn, but I adore Sulky!Miroku) and then proceeded to doodle in an attempt to find out which scene I wanted to draw. Haven't decided yet, but have found out that I can't draw proper [insert number of points]-perspective worth a damn.

Hn. And I still hate Deviant Art because, where will I put it when it's done?

Try photobucket thingy?

I had a look at it but it seemed slow, sometimes it was even down. I could try again, though. Thanks for the pointer! :)

Oh yeah...how about smartFTP, that should be good.

Photobucket doesn't allow nudity, either.

*sniff* I thought so... I wish there was a decent European site for that kind of thing. Because it would be so much more liberal . :(

And there are a bajillion "OMG, no, we've evolved PAST sex, we're pure and innocent and God's holy children (who do naughty things only when the lights are turned OFF)!" people out there.

YES! See, that's the problem. I'm all for freedom of expression and such, but could the stupid, retarded puritans please shut up?

So, you know, these sites have to cover their asses.

I'm aware of that... *sigh* I guess my problem is really the fact that I wish there were some site with that level of popularity which isn't subject to the laws of the United States in this matter. Because when it comes to this sort of things, those laws frankly suck. I don't like people telling me what I'm allowed to read/look at. It pisses me off.

And the kiddies should be monitored by their parents, not the state.

But on the other hand, I WANT MY GODDAMN SMUT.

Ditto. I swear, as soon as I start working I'll get a domain where I'll host stuff like this.

I need you to have your own domain too.. since I'm utterly and completely addicted to your work.

And yet, sex is not synonymous with porn.

That is very true. Goodness I don't blame you for being uncomfortable and/or upset. I myself am uncomfortable with the notion that DeviantArt believes it may judge what is art and what is not. Art in its very nature is meant to be subjective.

No sexual acts of any kind is rather broad. That could cover anything from kissing to full pentration. hm.

Soon! Well, soonish. As soon as I finish my thesis and start working at uni as an assistant. *rubs hands* And thanks. :)

I mentioned that somewhere else, but I'm really reminded of this incident where one of the popes had some no-name artists paint drawers on the nude figures Michelangelo did in the Cappella Sistina so nobody can see their naughty bits. :)

Until you get your own domain, I can host you at something like http://technoelfie.winter-rain.net/. I have 75GB transfer / 7 gigs of space, so it should be enough for a stopover til you get your own (since I'm sure you will prefer that). ^_^;;

My server occasionally has a slow time every couple days, but then again, It's only 110/year for all that and more. So.

Yes, let me know. ;p

Wow! Thanks for the offer, this is so very, very nice of you!

Um, I'd love to put up a tiny site, but I'd only use it for thos e pics I really can't post anywhere else if that's okay. Because I wouldn't want to take up more of your bandwidth than absolutely necessary.

Thanks again for the offer, I'm really speechless. ^^;

P.S. If you want to e-mail me, my address is technoelfie @ gmx dot net.

*totters off to email and set up server settings and whatnot*
May. 8th, 2004 11:31 am (UTC)
wahhh, my email didn't go through ;_;

Basically I asked what subdomain name you wanted :D

Because I'm stupid and can't type! It's technoelf @ gmx dot net, not technoelfie. Sorry! :(

Basically I asked what subdomain name you wanted :D

Um, is technoelfie okay?

Glad you've got somewhere to put stuff, I was going to offer room on my site. Offer's always open if you like.

I agree with you on your rant-- I get aggravated with people who try to tell me I shouldn't write smut into my stories, that I should "elevate" myself above it. These people must not have had a good orgasm recently, because honestly, is there any way to "rise above" a really slammin' orgasm? I think not, sez Cinnie.

But I digress. Sex is part of the "human condition", it's what creates us in the first place, and is a major motivation and driving force in our behaviours and actions. Pretending it's not there, that our characters are asexual beings, is a misrepresentation of their humanity. Or elvanity. Whatever. The point remains.

I find it amusing and ironic that deviantart isn't so deviant if they're forcing their members to conform to their ideas of propriety. Buggers.
May. 9th, 2004 07:14 am (UTC)
Yeah, the elevating part is particularly funny. Survival of the species, anyone? Not to mention that it's just plain fun.

And yes, it's incredible how many major historic events have been motivated by some king's inability to keep his dick in his pants.

And I think the deviantart guys are just plain scared -- which doesn't make it any less sad.

Well, I guess that kids rid of all that horrible, evil photography that shows bare waists! [/sarcasm]

What a bunch of jackasses. What is it with the internet these days? First FF.net bans NC-17 fiction, and now devianart does the same. For fuck's sake, this is the internet, the real test of freedom of the speech anywhere. If kids are young enough to be seriously affected by nudity, then that's parental responsibility, not a reason to restrict other people's rights.

However, I do have two options for you...

1.) You can use photobucket.com to post images. They have a size restraint, but it's completely free, and the size restraint isn't ridiculously small, so I think that's fair.

2.) I actually own a domain. It just isn't up now because I'm in between server transfers, and it's been slightly delayed by outside sources. What I can offer to do is give you a host or even a subsite, if you wish. I don't mind taking up the extra bandwidth, mostly because I'm literally wasting a ton of empty space as my personal sites are very non-graphic oriented, for the most part.

Until then, good luck on figuring out the alternative. :-/ (And on another note, they should have made an advanced warning that they were doing that!)

*cough* Well, obviously I was a bit late in posting, since I didn't know photobucket had that restraint, and I didn't see shadow's post.

But, hey, the author's still open on my domain if you need it.
May. 9th, 2004 07:30 am (UTC)
No problem. :) And thanks for the offer anyway, it's awfully sweet of you!
